How to Perform Umrah: A Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Pilgrims
Umrah is a journey of the heart, and knowing each step beforehand lets you perform it with presence and devotion. Your journey begins at home with the intention (niyyah) and the ihram, the simple white garments that unify every pilgrim. From your departure city — whether that is Dearborn, Toronto, London or Sydney — you enter a state of ihram at the designated miqat and recite the talbiyah. On arrival in Makkah, you perform tawaf: seven circuits of the Kaaba, beginning at the Black Stone, followed by two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim and drinking from the blessed water of Zamzam. Next comes sa'i, the brisk walk of seven laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah, retracing the footsteps of Lady Hajar (AS). Finally, the halq or taqsir — shaving or trimming the hair — completes your Umrah, and you are free from the state of ihram. Our scholar-led caravans walk you through every stage with live guidance, du'a books in English, and patient instruction for first-timers, so nothing about the rituals remains a mystery when you arrive at the Haram.
